issue: assault rifles

Consider this brief blog entry, which is an example of epideictic rhetoric: "Up in Arms," by Jason Rhody. What abstract qualities of Attorney General John Ashcroft are being emphasized? What audience would find this epidectic rhetoric persuasive? If you wanted to take the opposite approach to Rhody's, how would you do it?

The qualities of Attorney General John Ashcroft that are being emphasized could be that he doesn't want to violate privacy rights of gun owners therefore he is not going to check the lists that allow him to see who holds a firearm. The writer states that the AG believes that the pen is mightier than the sword. The audience that would fing this persuasive would be those who own guns. This blog sort of lets you see how those who do not own guns feel about it and you may also feel their concern for their safety. If I were taking the opposite approach, I would try to persuade people that it really is "safe" to own a firearm. Basically because if you have one then you are able to protect yourself from anyone that may try attacking you. However I agree with the passage and do not think that Uzi's and things of that nature are for just carrying around and I would really feel for my safety if I saw someone just having one around, for no reason.
